What if you could give yourself advice on the day you graduated high school? This is the letter that I would write to my past self.
My Open Letter
You know how everyone calls you Drew? That is going to stick with you. Don’t fight it, embrace it sooner.
There are 3 aspects of your life that I want to talk to you about today, your mind body and spirit. Because today is different than yesterday. Not because of the reasons you might think, but today you will receive the best advice anyone will ever give you.
I will break this down for you but bear in mind, this will be brutally honest.
I know you have started college and that is great. You have a head start. You will be the first person in your graduating class to have a degree. You will also be the first to have a second, third, and fourth. Don’t stop there. Don’t stop until you have a doctorate. No one has ever received a doctorate and said they wish they would have stopped sooner.
You have no skills. Get a job delivering pizzas and work around 20-30 hours a week, you are there to have money in your pocket, and money to put into savings… nothing else. This isn’t a career, so don’t try to turn it into one. You should face the facts now, you only have a high school diploma. You aren’t too good to work in food service. Plus delivering pizza you get tips! So rather than just making minimum wage and working 40 hours you can get the same crappy pay in half the time. Remember this isn’t the end, just the beginning.
That money, though, only spend around 70% of you take home pay. The rest should be invested and tithed. Don’t feel any social obligations that will tell you otherwise. Most people are broke. Especially 20 years in the future.
Most likely you will get your Juris Doctorate so you will probably work at a law firm to pay off all of that student debt… that is ok, you will have your own business one day, and will be set for life. Then again even if you don’t, having a Juris Doctorate is great for your resume… remember no one gets a doctorate and regrets it. You may also get that doctorate in exercise science or physical therapy. Those are both good choices too. You really like numbers… even economics wouldn’t be a bad go to. The topic is irrelevant. The level of degree you possess is what matters most.
The girl that you gazed into her eyes last night, isn’t the love of your life. The next girl probably won’t be either. There are over 3 billion women on this planet and it will feel like you have dated half of them before you meet the love of your life. That is ok.
Once you have found the love of your life, you have a choice that has already been made before you even say I do. You either followed the advice in this letter or you didn’t. If you did… Good job. You realized that every decision you made today had an impact on the life you have in the future. So any spending rather than saving makes your house 20 years from now smaller. It also increases the amount of student debt you get your kids into. Do you want your kids in student debt like you? Stick to your guns… only spend 70%.
All the friends you have now will disappear. All of the friends you make will disappear. You will basically have one friend your entire life that isn’t your wife, embrace that fact, and don’t try to change it. By the way… share this advice with him.
You have to take good care of yourself. Your metabolism is at its peak, and so are your hormones. You know how you don’t have a job, and you don’t have bills… start running, doing push-ups and sit-ups every day. THEN once you get a job, your first bill is going to be a gym membership, and you are going to learn how to get your butt out of bed and workout. Then you are going to learn how to go to bed and get some sleep.
Do you remember when we talked about the love of your life? Take care of yourself for her AND for you. Daddy bellies are over-rated and 30 will be here before you know it. Lot’s of people will have huge guts. Not everyone will have a 6-pack.
As far as your diet goes, don’t start eating crap, just because you are young and it doesn’t matter. Also, don’t start drinking. People that drink will never judge you for NOT drinking. However, people that don’t drink WILL judge you for drinking. It is a reality, and also the reason I stopped… so don’t start.
I can’t stress the point of taking care of the body. Read read and read how to do it. That will be good for the mind and good for the body.
John 3:17 is just as important as John 3:16. You will not understand your religion until you realize your God did not send his son to tell people they are going to hell. If God didn’t send his son to tell people they are going to hell, he didn’t send you to do that either. So, when you read your bible for the first time all the way through, remember that. When you make any choice pertaining to someone else’s livelihood remember that.
God wrote that bible to tell YOU how to live YOUR life, not for YOU to read it and tell everyone else how to live THIER life.
I know this open letter may not make much sense to you. I wish I could go in much more detail. Just know that you will probably not follow any of this advice. That is ok! So when you are 32 years old realize something about your life…. You have no control over when your life ends. You may live to be 100 or 50. No one knows. However, you get to decide when your life begins.
