Everyone hates me! Someone told me that anyway so it has to be true. It has been confirmed. The results are in! 100% of surveys counted.
Who was this low down deadbeat? It was a kid in 1st grade. It is ok, I was in 1st grade too. What if I would have led my life based on that evidence? Now, how often do we live our life based on this exact same evidence?
So, what the heck is a confirmation bias? It is the bias that you naturally have to only hear the facts pertaining to an opinion that you already have.
In Layman’s Terms:
Let’s use an example. Do you know how you the Green Bay Packers are the best football team of all time? (good, I don’t either, but go with me) If you are a Packers fan… everything you hear positive about the Packers, confirms, why they are the greatest team ever. Have you ever thought, “How could someone like X team?” Well, they think the same about your team.
In other words, we only hear what we want to be true!
Let’s talk about religion for a minute. Obviously, there is some confirmation bias in religion… all of them. We all think we are right, and we have the facts to prove it.
Here is the crazy part about it, though. Did you know there are over one million pagans in the world? That is a serious fact. There are one million people that can show you, without a shadow of a doubt in their mind, the witchcraft they practice is 100% real.
Dismissing Your Confirmation Bias
How do you prove your opinion with only facts?
Sorry, I know you were expecting some deep explanation, and newfound mental clarity. However, this is the issue with bias. If you think that the Green Bay Packers are the best football team…. nothing I say or do will ever change your mind. On the other hand, you are also very unlikely to convince me your witchcraft is real.
Remember, there is never a winner in an argument. Only people that get confirmation from others they won.
