I am long overdue from publishing this. While I was running for governor, I would get buried in messages sometimes it would take me almost a week to respond. I had an email that collected comments and form-fills from my website and I lost track of one of the emails along the way and it took me almost a month to respond.
This email would become one of the most disturbing conversations I never had. I responded to the email… something told me to keep digging. The lady asked me what was I going to do to provide healthcare to the poor.
Obviously, my state has been plagued with questions about Medicaid expansion. Should we, or shouldn’t we… We have a real problem. Many people in our state have the mentality that people are in the place they are in because they made the choice to be in that state.
Since we are so religious I believe that it is driven into us by our religion. If we are good and do the work of God then good things will happen, but if we are bad we get punished. Never have I heard us preach that some people don’t deserve what they are getting and some people get what they don’t deserve.
Why do bad things happen to good people?
I think we don’t talk about things like this very often because it is tough for us to explain why, in a world that God is in complete control, would something not go according to his plan.
Many would say that this is blasphemy, but I can assure you things don’t always go according to God’s plan.
Back to the email
After much consideration, I decided to use my awesome skills and look this lady up that sent me the email. My ultimate goal was to reach out and apologize for taking so long to respond. Especially since it was such an oversight.
After a couple of days of no response, I was on the trail. Seeing if I could find any other way to get in touch with her.
What did I find? An obituary.
Why is this so disturbing?
First, I don’t know this lady at all. She wasn’t old, and I am pretty sure it wasn’t an accident. What could I possibly deduce from this? She probably died from some health issue. My guess she knew there was a problem. Also another guess… she couldn’t get proper treatment.
I am not trying to sound like some sort of bleeding heart pinko commie douchebag here… but can this continue?
When as a society can we say that we have the best interest of people in mind…. and we just let them die.
The argument that I don’t want to hear
I get it… it costs money. I get it… you love your money and want to keep all of it. I also get the fact the government is really terrible at managing stuff. But here is the end of that argument…
Faith hope and love… and the greatest of these is love. If you have one ounce of love for humankind we can’t let these kinds of things happen.
