Problems or challenges? Does it really matter what you call them? Your mind has the ability to take something on based on your belief system.
Framing Your Beliefs
If you believe you can, or believe you can’t you are right. I believe that is roughly what Henry Ford said. The task is the same, but you are the one that ultimately decides the outcome.
So if you have a belief system in place, and it becomes defeatist then you will probably be beaten. I have used football as a reference point, probably a bit too much, but let’s use it again.
A prevent defense is used during the final moments of a game. The goal of the prevent defense is to not allow the opponent to score. You may say, “but that is the goal of every defense!” That isn’t the case. A typical defense formation has a goal to not let the opponent gain any yardage. Thus they don’t score.
Here is where framing comes into play. 20% of offensive production comes from when the defense has a prevent defense on the field.
Sadly, only 3% of the plays involve a prevent defense.
When a defense plays to win (97% of the game) they win… When a defense plays to NOT lose (3% of the game) they give up more yardage.
The “Miracle at Jordan-Hare” can be found here. In this particular play, Georgia lined up in the prevent defense… literally had their hands on the ball, and lost the game.
In a normal defense, that ball would have been swatted and stopped. It was 4th down, everything was stacked against Auburn. However, Chris Davis, played to win, while the other team played not to lose.
The end result? 16% of the offensive production happened in around 10 seconds.
Football and Framing
How many times do you do something that makes 100% sense, yet the outcome is completely the opposite? This is an issue of invalid framing. Why as the head coach would you not have put in your roughest toughest guys, sacked the quarterback, took a knee and won the game? Because of embarrassment. You frame yourself to be in a position so you can say you tried, but didn’t succeed.
If you frame yourself for success, rather than trial you will be far more likely to succeed.
