Obviously, every road needs a guide. Maybe it is your map or your GPS… maybe even memory, but every time you set out on a direction, you need a guide. That is the reason I started Drew Tolbert’s Guide to Wealth and Health. I wanted a roadmap to success. (get it? Guide to Wealth and Health…) I was afraid to trust my own memory. I am an avid learner and listener. So I started keeping a journal at the instruction of someone teaching a seminar, compiled some information, and when I need ideas I just pick some topics out of my journal and write about them.
One topic started staring me in the face, and that was Tony Robbins’s Hour of Power idea. In a nutshell, he says to take the first 60 minutes of your day for you, and go through tasks that will help improve you!
So I wanted to share with you a little about my schedule and some of my favorite tasks, and the why they made it into my hour of power.
Wake up at
4:30 AM 4:00 AM
Am I suggesting you do that, NO! With my work, I can get to work when I want to, so I choose to work early and leave early rather than work late and leave late. You NEED to get up early, but your early and my early may look like 2 completely different things. For example, if you work second shift, maybe 7 AM is your early and not 5 AM.
The squeamish are starting to get sick reading that. For those of you that don’t know what that is, it is basically a device you use to dump water in your nose to flush it out. Everyone says I am crazy for this… but it WORKS! It helps with allergies and morning stuffiness. When I say it was life-changing, IT WAS!
Anyone that knows anything about me knows that I hate skipping breakfast. So, I don’t really do a protein shake as a protein supplement, but as a meal replacement. I don’t get any kind of fancy powders, and I am not a member of some MLM firm that overcharges for their version of slim fast. It is just the fuel I need to do the next step…
Again anyone that knows anything about me should know what I stand for! Go ahead and Google my name (Drew Tolbert Birmingham AL) you will see all sorts of posts about fitness or social media likes and comments on local gyms. One thing I have noticed about social media, it truly shows what you are about. If you were to look at my news feed it would be posts of positivity and awesomeness, what does yours look like? (sorry I digressed)
I go to work out sometimes 10 times in a week, other times I only go 5 times. But one thing you can count on… I ALWAYS go in the morning. The afternoon workout I may miss, or skip, or not need. But if you want to get dedicated to life change the morning is the best time to do it.
I stretch. I can fold in half, my spine and back thanks me for this. A lot of people do yoga, and a lot of people workout, but rarely do they do both. I believe that maintaining muscle strength as well as flexibility is the key to longevity. If you are doing both, along with a healthy diet, I will see you in your 100’s
Being from the south, like I am, meditation is sometimes a 4 letter word. Meditation oftentimes gets associated with evil. It is mostly because it is an eastern concept that scares the heck out of us Christian folk (how is that for my southern). There was too much evidence for me to NOT do it. It calms you, clears your mind, and helps prevent you from going crazy later in life.
I have never had a closed mind when it comes to most things, so I started at a fairly young age with meditation. I also don’t buckle under pressure, have better self-awareness than most, and I am pretty laid back. I will never forget someone telling me when I was 14 years old (ironically it was a preacher) that I was so laid back I would probably never die. You know the craziest thing??? He has been right so far.
That is my hour of power in a nutshell. I love the idea behind it. When I first started working out I told my wife I would not let it interfere with our marriage, and that is why I started working out in the morning. It is the perfect time to be selfish and only focus on you. The kids are in bed and half the world around you is asleep. It is a great way to clear your mind so you can conquer the day ahead of you.
I can only hope that my hour of power inspires you to have your own hour.
