I typically don’t run around bragging about my musical ability. Unless you bring it up. I got an email the other day asking about my musical talent from a very interesting source.
Well now that the click bait is over, and you are in here reading I will tell you. It was an author that had just written a guest post. (Hi Amar!)
He was curious where my other posts about music were… Well, here is my first.
Life as a Musician
My musical career was cut very short by my intolerance for lazy band members. I saw music ultimately as a business.
My friends did not see it that way. To them it was art.
That is ok, art is needed in this world. However, starving artists ultimately die (probably from starvation) and become famous.
That is how art works. It increases in value after someone dies. Once someone dies they can’t recreate their art, thus it is more popular.
Music is popular when it is popular (end Yogi Berra impersonation). Artists that have truly made it are known for best-selling albums. Getting lots of downloads, or plays via streaming. Don’t forget about plays on YouTube.
All of this generates revenue for the band. Notice that I didn’t say musicians that Artists have made it when they become the best. There are plenty of terrible mainstream artists. They all sell a ton more records than me, too. (Do we still call them records?)
Music is not about being different. Many musicians force that, and it doesn’t work out for them. Once you are at the top you are allowed to be weird. When you are starting you just attract people.
Everyone won’t like you, don’t force it.
Some people will like you, embrace it.
Creating my art
I am a lot more popular as an author than I was a musician. Do I still play? Of course. It is now completely a hobby, and I don’t miss arguing with band members at all.
Will I ever release any of my music?
Maybe I already did!
Thanks for reading,
