How long does it take to boil water? That depends completely on how hot your stove is. So how long does it take to reach your goal? That depends on your intensity.
When you are setting out to do something that you have never done before, placing a completion date on that sounds like a disaster. However, not time stamping something also creates the “Alan Harper” dilemma.
If you are waiting for Alan Harper to move out, then you might have to wait awhile. The only thing worse than waiting for Alan Harper to move out is actually being Alan Harper. You make all of these big plans, but you never actually achieve anything.
Time Based Goals
I will be completely honest though, the weight I thought I was going to lose in about 6 months. As far as the money goes, I was expecting that in around 3 months.
The more I practice the luckier I get
I will admit a lot of my timing had much more to do with just being there, than it had to do with skill. However, I cannot stress the importance of actually starting to work on a goal, with an end in mind.
If you drive, how long does it take to get there? Someone asked me about a drive that I make quite frequently, the time it took me to get there. I didn’t have a good answer. I also couldn’t tell you how long it takes me to take a shower. I couldn’t tell you how long it takes me to put on a pair of pants, fix my hair, or drink my protein shake.
The reason I couldn’t tell you is because it is part of my routine, and the goal is to be ready to “work.” My goal isn’t to put on a pair of pants. That is a step in achieving my goal.
Time Based Wealth
How long does it take you to save $500? I don’t know. However if you said I am going to save $500 this month, you could do it. Here is how that works… You will see the days start to pass, and you will notice, I only have 3 days and $450. I do have this set of golf clubs in the back of the closet I never use.
You sell the clubs for $50, and your goal is met. When you have a deadline, you think more about your goal and a way to accomplish it.
Time Based Health
If I have a goal to run for 30 minutes everyday, I will abandon that goal. The reason is, because that is your routine. The goal should say I want to be able to run non-stop for 30 minutes every day, and I will accomplish this goal in 12 weeks. Thanks to couch to 5k there are a ton of apps and books to help you achieve this goal.
This goal is doable for most everyone. Once you set it, get your tools, you are on your way.
