Nick Saban reminds me a lot of the Barack Obama presidency… in the sense that everyone in the southeast blames Nick Saban for everything wrong with the SEC. Think about it… before Nick Saban, the average tenure for a SEC Football coach was several years, now they last as long as it takes one of their fans to draw up a “We want BAMA” sign. Thanks,
Think about this… outside of Saban, Dan Mullen is the longest running coach in the SEC. (Editor’s note: I typically write timeless information blog posts but this one has an expiration date of about 1 day after publication)
Next point… teams that have won the SEC Championship multiple times outside of Alabama since Saban’s arrival at Alabama… 1- Auburn. It took them, 2 coaches, to do it!
Who will replace Butch Jones at Tennessee?
Tennessee is luckily in the SEC East… however, they get the opportunity every year on the 3rd Saturday in October (sometimes it is the 4th they just call it the 3rd) to lose to Nick Saban. When was the last time Saban lost to Tennessee… Obama wasn’t even president, yet. In fact, he wasn’t part of the US Senate yet… he was actually a member of the Illinois State Senate. Because that was in 2001! I was still in high school!!!
So, unless Butch Jones becomes magical like Les Miles or something (eat the grass Butch EAT THE GRASS!!!!) He will be out. His replacement???
My short list:
- Jim Bob Cooter (not a joke real name)
- Chip Kelly
- Bobby Petrino
- Mike Houston
- Jon Gruden
The bottom 4 are solely based on performance. As far as Jim Bob goes… well he is a Tennessee boy (shock of the century).
Who will replace Gus Malzahn at Auburn?
Auburn gets the opportunity to ruin Alabama’s season annually. Why do I say that? It is the last game of the season, and here is the inside secret… if Auburn is playing for their fate… they always win. That is why Alabama hates Auburn so much. Well, actually it is a 150-year-old hatred that just stemmed over to football due to the fact that a feltering Methodist school ultimately got a grant to be the states first A&M college in the state of Alabama (if you didn’t know that… well it is probably more about the Cam-back or the kick-six).
If Auburn is soooo good at beating Alabama why are they firing Gus? Well, they won’t if he beats them and Georgia. However, notice how I gave 2 examples… and how Auburn has won the SEC Championship twice in the Alabama-Saban marriage…. WELL! That is the issue. The team did it, but Gus only did it once. It was called the Cam-back not the Gus-back.
Even though they do win in that scenario. That scenario has only come up twice in recent history.
The short list of the replacements:
- Chip Kelly
- P. J. Fleck
- Mike Norvell
- Bobby Petrino
- Art Briles
P.J Fleck is the only candidate that I am seriously happy with. Art Briles would actually be the only person that would provide a proven improvement. However, you get baggage… and well Auburn doesn’t deal with baggage.
Who will replace Kevin Sumlin at Texas A&M?
Your claim to fame was Johnny Manziel… no one cares.
- No one cares
- Go back to the Big 12
- Bob Stoops (he said the SEC was overrated… up for the challenge)
- Kevin Sumlin
- Lane Kiffin (Everyone in the SEC actually wants this!)
